Final Major Project

This piece relates to the inaccessibility of rock climbing both in the sport and community.  The ceramic climbing holds may look similar to ones you would find inside a gym, but their fragility makes them unusable, and the arrangement may look uniform and neat but the lack of flow means it would be a terrible route to climb. It is all for show, similarly to the structure of the climbing community.
Priding itself on being down to earth and nonmaterialistic, you would think this community would be the most acceptable. Yet, if you walk into any climbing gym you will find yourself mostly surrounded by wealthy white people. As part of this project I examined the possible causes and results of this fact, collecting qualitive research by interviewing customers at my local climbing gym.
I casted a master mould over an original hold I sculpted and used it to form 40 others, hand finishing them all by smoothing them over and carving in details.
